Continuously increasing student achievement over the past years is why Jackson School was identified as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2006. The school’s scores have surpassed not only the district scores by 14%-21%, but also exceeded performance levels of the state by 3%-13%. Since the 2000-2001 school year, more than 85% of our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students have scored in the proficient/advanced range.
The staff at Jackson uses data to drive their instruction, breaking it down to understand and learn how all our students are learning. Communication between teachers is ongoing, with special education and ELL staff providing services to students in the regular classroom setting to improve student learning. Teachers share best practices and effective teaching strategies on a weekly, many times daily, basis. If students are not meeting goals, team teaching using flexible grouping is used. Ongoing communication is shared with tutors and other volunteers to ensure instruction is aligned with current areas of need. All students are expected to achieve at Jackson School. Teachers use many instructional strategies, such as flexible grouping, literature circles, compacting, and tiered interventions, to meet the needs of all students. Writing is used in all content areas.
Annie Jackson School works in partnership with parents. We begin on the first day of school by participating in the national First Day of School Celebration. Parents come to school with their students, and together hear classroom and school expectations. Parents also support our Summer Readers’ Club and Summer Writers’ Club by providing incentives for student participation. In addition to our open door policy, student-led conferences are held twice a year, leading to a 99% participation rate. Newsletters go home from each classroom at least twice a month, and from the school once a month. Annie Jackson’s learning council, consisting of the principal, staff, and parents, reviews assessment data yearly and monitors progress reaching the school’s learning goal. The school’s learning goal and its results are communicated to parents in the monthly newsletter, as is the yearly assessment data.
Annie Jackson School provides many extended learning opportunities for children not only within the classroom, but also after school. Students have the opportunity to participate in our afterschool Spanish program that is offered during the spring trimester, reading buddies, the climbing wall, 5th grade boys and girls basketball, and show choir. Annie Jackson School has partnered with Bellin Health and is a THRIVE School. Students and families have the opportunity to participate in health events and wellness fairs during the school year.
The staff at Annie Jackson School continually interacts with the other schools and the community to share our successes as well as to learn from others. Our staff was awarded the Partners in Education Golden Apple Award in 2002 for its work in improving student writing. In 2003 the staff was awarded the St. Vincent Hospital Young Philanthropist Award for the large amount of service work the school provided the Green Bay community.
